Songs from the yiddish theater stage
Songs From the Yiddish Theater Stage celebrates the “mamaloshen” – the Yiddish language – that embodied the spirit of the Jewish people in song, stage and film of yesteryear…and the not-too-distant past. You’ll hear songs like “Bei Mir Bistu Schein” from the comedy musical I Would if I Could – later turned into a worldwide hit by the Andrews Sisters as “Bei mir bist du schön” – and tunes from early Yiddish movies Yiddle with His Fiddle and Mamele – both starring Molly Picon, who would go on to star as Yenta, the Matchmaker in Fiddler on the Roof. No trip through Yiddish theater and film would be complete without selections from Fiddler on the Roof and Yentl, which will be rounded out by popular Yiddish tunes of yesterday, like “Sam, You Made the Pants too Long” and “I’m a Boarder at My Wife’s.”
